Making Movie Sound Effects: Foley Artist Short Doc

    February 24, 2011 by Patrick

SoundWorks Collection: Gary Hecker – Veteran Foley Artist from Michael Coleman on Vimeo.

I find the art of making sound effects fascinating. Michael Coleman’s short documentary follows Foley artist Gary Hecker and his process for creating the effects for somewhat recent Russell Crowe Robin Hood film.

Foley is a totally amazing art form. Its super interesting to see amount of tools Hecker uses to create each of the sounds. At the same time I feel like the doc makes the process seem fairly simple by showing a horse, reminiscent of classic Monty Python scene. Yet this isn’t two coconuts against each other. The amount of work Foley takes is pretty remarkable.

    Seen on Gawker.

    Sound Proofing Tutorial

    December 21, 2010 by Patrick

How to make a rockwool acoustic panel from Bradley Steenkamp on Vimeo.

When recording a voice over or a sound effect, often times we’ve needed to sound proof a room. Usually this means finding a quick, cheap and temporary way to lower noise (blankets on the walls and the like.) Bradley Steenkamp posted a great solution by creating permanent acoustic panels. Using a bit of wood, cheap fabric and rockwool insulation he created beautiful panels at a reasonable price.
