iPhone 4S vs. 5D mk II

    October 17, 2011 by Patrick

iPhone 4S / Canon 5d MKII Side by Side Comparison from Robino Films on Vimeo.

There has been a lot of talk about the video features within the new iPhone 4S. It’s 1080p camera has been claimed to be able to shoot 4k quality video. To see how the iPhone 4S truly competes, Robino Films created a shot for shot comparison video.

Even though The 5D still comes out on top its hard to deny the quality of the iPhone’s sensor. Once you start to think about the amount of control the 5D offers and the capability of having a much larger depth of field, it’s really no question which is better. Obviously, I don’t believe that’s the point of the video. The test isn’t exactly a scientific test (the video is encoded for vimeo.) But it’s interesting to see how a camera phone’s image quality is truly starting to compete with a standard pro DSLR.

    Big Ole Lens Test

    September 14, 2011 by Patrick

Benjamin Eckstein and a few Boston area shooters decided create a video that might help to put the lens debate to rest. They tested a bunch of different lenses from Tamron 17-50 f2.8 ($450) all the way to the Cooke s4 35mm f2.0 (approx $18,000) to see which delivered the best on the AF-100.

Obviously a simple comparison video won’t end the war of words on which lens is best, but its nice to see a bunch of different lenses back to back to compare how each looks. Each lens handles differently as well, so it’s hard to make a venture at which is best without using them yourself.

For all the details of the shoot check out Eckstein’s blog.

FS100 5D GH2 Outdoor Dynamic Range Test – Updated with Grading Examples from Matthew Thomas on Vimeo.

If you’re thinking about buying (or renting) the upcoming Sony NEXFS-100 you might want to check out this interesting dynamic range test posted by Cinema5d user mthomas. The test compares the GH2 and the 5D mk II to the new large sensor Sony camcorder. It seems to do very well. I’m excited to see more once the camera ships. Check out the video and see what you think.

    UPDATE: AF100, F3, FS100 Shoot Out

    May 5, 2011 by Patrick

AF100 vs F3 vs FS100 Part 1: The Real World from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.

Philip Bloom posted this nice “real world” comparison between the Pansonic AF100, Sony F3, FS100 and the Canon 5D mark II. He covers usability, wide shots, moire, darkness, gain and more.

He wanted to stress that this isn’t the extremely precise (different lenses, outputs, color correction, etc.) but it’s still helpful to see the comparisons. The video claims to be part one in a series with the next being handling and features.

For more info, check out Philip Bloom.

UPDATE: He just posted part two. Check it out below.

AF100 vs F3 vs FS100 Part 2: In depth and conclusions. from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.

    AF100 vs RED

    February 17, 2011 by Patrick

Panasonic AF-100 Vs RED Green and White screen comparison from McGee Digital Media Inc. on Vimeo.

Pretty exciting to see the AF100 perform so well against a RED. Its always fun to see two extremely hyped cameras back to back. Also interesting to see the $5000 AF100 look better (in my humble opinion) than the $25,000 RED (although it does lack the MX chip.)

Panning Speed: Canon 5D mkII vs. Panasonic GH2

    January 3, 2011 by Patrick

Rolling shutter comparison, Canon 5D mark II vs Panasonic Lumix GH2 @ identical panning speed, shutter roll, jello effect from Mike Kobal on Vimeo.

Planet 5D posted a Canon EOS 5D mkII and Panasonic Lumix GH2 panning comparison video by Mike Kobal. It seems both cameras suffer from pretty noticeable jello effect (the faster you pan the more the objects loose shape.) Check it out above.

Field of View: Pansonic AF-100 vs. Sony F3

    December 30, 2010 by Patrick

Sony F3 vs Panasonic AF-101 Field of View comparison from Philip Bloom on Vimeo.

The Panasonic AF-100 is now shipping and I know a lot people are debating picking one up or waiting for some of the competitors to come out with their own camcorder style DSLRs. Philip Bloom was lucky enough to be able to test out the Sony F3. He’s been posting a bit about field of view lately (which you should really check out, its super informative.) He recently posted a nice comparison of the field of view on both the AF-100 and the F3, check out the video above.

For more details check out the entire post at Philip Bloom.
