Incredibly Cheap And Easy DIY Bokeh Effect

    March 9, 2011 by Patrick

DIY bokeh from Eirik Solheim on Vimeo.

I’ve talked a bit about bokeh in the past. I think its a fascinating effect. While it might not be appropriate for a lot of projects, it can offer a unique look. Eirik Solheim found a fairly easy way to create a DIY bokeh effect using black paper and tape. By simply cutting out shapes and placing them in front of the lens, Solheim achieved some gorgeous visuals with a little work and a lot of ingenuity.

Take a look at Solheim’s blog for more information.

Chinese New Year Captured By DSLRs

2011: The Year of the Rabbit from Jonah Kessel on Vimeo.

DLSR News Shooter posted a beautiful video from Chinese New Year in Beijing. Using a Canon 7D and a 5D mark II, Jonah Kessel and friends captured the amazing holiday firework displays from the small firecrackers to the monstrous palm explosions around town.

I really dig how they used the bokeh effect for the fireworks. It gives such a strange and compelling image. Really cool use of light and darkness.

Light Works – Video Using DIY Bokeh Effect

    January 10, 2011 by Patrick

Light Works from Supernormals on Vimeo.

Supernormals just posted an incredible video on vimeo using a really amazing bokeh effect. Bokeh is how your lens deals with out of focus light. They cut the words out of vinyl stickers and stuck them to glass. Then they placed the glass in a matte box and used that with their lens. If you’re interested in doing it yourself, they posted a great making of video that shows how they made each of the words seen in the video.

This is fantastic DIY idea. It’s crazy that with an x-acto knife, a few supplies and a steady hand you can create such an effect. It does take that little bit of work, but the results are really something.
