Paul Irmiter Series Dacar: An Introduction

Veteran photographer Paul Irmiter created a series of elaborate rigs to capture the light leaks and lens flares in this series. By detaching the Dacar lens from the original folding camera body and fixing it to a Panasonic AF100 with a custom mount, Irmiter was able to record subtle optical flaws that are unique to this lens. This video contains an in-depth look at his process and contains steps that you can follow to create your own light leaks. For a look at how to use the Paul Irmiter Series in FCP 6/7/X, you can also take a look at the tutorial videos.

The Dacora Dacar Lens

The light leaks and lens flares in this collection were created using a 1953 Dacar lens, originally attached to a camera body made by German manufacturer Dacora-Kamerawerk. Dacora made a line of affordable, popular folding cameras, including the better-known Dacora Subita. To create this collection, Paul Irmiter detached the original Dacar lens, including the bellows, and created a custom Canon EF mount that allowed him to attach the lens to a Panasonic AF100 (via a normal EF-MFT adapter). This allowed Irmiter to capture optical effects created by dirt, age, and reflection off of parts of the attached Vario shutter.
